Sitting front and center the children and I enjoyed a delightful dinner at Swifty’s, once New York’s preeminent society boîte, has recently opened in Palm beach this season with a pop up at the iconic Colony Hotel.  An Upper East Side stalwart for almost two decades, Swifty’s ended its run in 2016 to the despair of Manhattan’s food elite. Now, founder and good friend Robert Caravaggi together with Colony Hotel owners Sara and Andrew Wetenhall, bring the restaurant that inspired an international following to Palm Beach for a limited engagement.  I am so completely thrilled as everything on the menu is delish, and the ambience is fabulous!

Down a beautiful old world street in the middle of Greenwich Village in New York City lives a private school with an enormous heart. The type of heart that is inclusive and accepting, that caters to the values and ethics of traditions and beliefs. Where parents and children regularly see each other for dinners and play dates, morning assembly that unite parents and children before the day begins, a place where friendships are made for life.

Board-of-Trustees-1024x683

Board of Trustees: Judy McCool, Michelle-Marie Heinemann, Headmistress Angela Coombs, Amanda Shamis, Neil Edward St. Clair

This private School is The Academy of Saint Joseph and this metaphorical heart translates into a strong School culture, with robust and overlapping interactions among all members of the School community.

Ms. Angela Coombs is the Headmistress and in her 40th year as an educator. She is the driving force behind this positive energy that you can see and feel as soon as you enter the building. It’s evident on the walls, in the students and staff, and in every classroom you visit.

“It has been such a privilege to share in the lives of so many children and their families throughout these years. And even more, to watch these children grow up into the finest of young men and women who are building lives of their own, lives that will impact the world. I have had the great honor to attend College graduations and weddings of former students, to serve as a godparent for the children of former students. I have also attended funerals of parents of my students and shared in that grief with them. There is no question that educators have been given a great responsibility when a parent entrusts the care of his/her child to a School but also the greatest of privileges to share in their living and learning.” Says Ms. Coombs.

It is this cohesive thread of developing strong relationships with the families that make AOSJ so special. Parents want a direct line of communication with the teachers and Head of the School, they want to know that their child will be safe and cared for with respect and encouragement. RJ David, a principal with the Carlyle group says “We chose AOSJ for my son Rylan, because it had the right combination of intimate class sizes, challenging curriculum, diverse tight-knit community and religious values.  We believe this unique school environment provides a strong foundation for our son to be a well-rounded, high integrity and academically strong leader for the next generation.”

Strong relationships with other International Schools are equally important as AOSJ teaches on a global level, making children aware of other cultures and environments. Le Rosey, the Swiss Boarding school in Rolle Switzerland recently visited, offering a wonderful opportunity and experience provided by their summer camp, and boarding School in the secondary years.

Jacques Bounin, the admissions director of Le Rosey and dear friends with Michelle-Marie Heinemann, who’s daughter Hyacinth is in third grade at AOSJ discussed and welcomed all members of the AOSJ community to visit his School. “I am thrilled that my daughter loves School, and the closeness the parents share is amazing. We spend so much time together away from the School because we genuinely are an extended family. This is the magic of the School, the warmth and kindness amongst each other, and constant concern, the most amazing School culture.” Says Ms. Heinemann.

In the Spring the AOSJ will offer an upcoming tour of Europe. An exclusive travel abroad opportunity that includes a tour of London and Paris with the focus on the most iconic landmarks. Always a highlight on Spring Break!

New York City Socialite Michelle-Marie Heinemann hosted a glamorous Communion dinner party in honor of her daughter, Hyacinth Cornelia Heinemann at The Carlyle Hotel. Earlier in the day, Hyacinth received her first communion at The Church of Saint Joseph in the West Village. Family and Friends gathered to celebrate this special occasion with a delicious feast prepared by the Carlyle.

Hyacinth wore a custom party dress made by the French designer Isabel Marant and Chanel ankle boots. The Communion Cake was a five-layer white chocolate buttercream with edible gold leaf crosses. Michelle-Marie made a beautiful toast to her daughter and applauded her commitment and dedication towards the receiving of her first Communion.

According to ZAGAT…You’re “in the hands of a Master” at Chef Masa Takayama’s “serene” Upper East Side Japanese (located below the Gagosian Art Gallery) where the “delicate” sushi made from the “freshest quality” fish is offered alongside a diverse array of cooked dishes.

I personally couldn’t agree more! Living around the corner I am there at least once a week, and I am never disappointed. I must admit I tend to order the same dishes over and over again…because they are just so delicious. However, my beautiful children are more adventurous and always bring something new to the table that we have not tried.

Some of our favorites include: Beef Avocado Tartare Caviar With White Truffle, Tai White Truffle Ceviche, Daikon Cucumber with Yuzu Honey ( salad ), Vegetable Chowder with Clams, Coconut Lobster Tacos, Beef Skewers Yuzu Kosho, Fried Calamari with Chili Salt. ( my favorite )

Located conveniently on the Upper East Side! Kappo Masa is a must!

NYFW 2017-2018 FALL/WINTER COLLECTION

FEBRUARY 14, 2017 4pm – 7pm

 Salomon Arts Gallery 83 Leonard Street, 4th floor

Nene Shoe Creates a Sophisticated Approach to Matching Mother / Daughter Footwear

“Currently, our flats, wedges, and derbies attract both women and kids, because the designs have components that appeal to both,” says Designer Jasmine Mendoza.

Nene Designer and Creative Director Jasmine Mendoza, along with her husband Froilan as Technical Director, are introducing a new fashion line of wedges, flats, derbies and sneakers for mothers and daughters. Inspired by global international travel, Froilan and Jasmine combined their strengths to become the husband-and-wife team behind Nene Shoes.

Nene Shoes (pronounced /ne-ne/, “ne” as “net”) is based on Jasmine’s mom’s name, Nene M. Pamintuan. In the Filipino language, nene means little girl or young woman. While growing up in the Philippines, the rich culture of sights, tastes and sounds offered an influential base. In 2013, Jasmine left a corporate life involving travel as a consultant to join a financial services company. As her schedule stabilized, she was able to use her creativity to build something of her own. By leveraging her husband Froilan’s start-up expertise, Jasmine and he partnered to implement their shared vision: Filling a void in the market for a more sophisticated approach to mommy-and-me shoes. Jasmine started designing in 2014 and launched the first Nene Shoes collection in 2015.

Nene shoes has the kid-meets-adult look. Jasmine explains, “An exciting kid’s shoe can have the sophistication and practicality of an adult shoe. It doesn’t need bows, overly done designs, or boxed toes. My daughter wants to imitate what I wear, and at the same time, I want her to experience and enjoy some of the more mature-yet-practical styles in the same way that I do. Currently, we have flats, wedges and derbies for women and kids. Each style has two-three colorways. For Spring 2017, we are adding more styles and introducing slip-on sneakers which will initially be available in two colors.

“In my twenties, I traveled extensively in Asia, Europe and the United States,” Jasmine recalls, “I lived in Hong Kong, Germany, and the United States for months at a time, while shuttling back and forth to Manila. I observed what people wore to better understand their tastes, needs, and desires, based on their demographics. When I visit the Linea Pelle fairs, I am constantly on the lookout for new leather materials and prints. At times, the materials create an initial inspiration for the design and construction of shoes–not the other way around. Currently, our flats, wedges, and derbies attract both women and kids, because the designs have components that appeal to both.

“If you look at the footwear market today,” Jasmine continues, “kid’s shoes are usually made from man-made or synthetic materials. As much as possible, we like to use genuine leather, while maintaining competitive prices comparable to other brands’ synthetic shoes. We don’t compromise design or quality for the sake of anything. All designs bear our signature logos, a woman’s and kid’s footprint placed side by side, to create an image of a butterfly.”

“Most importantly, I look at the practicality and comfort of the design. As a mom, I would only buy what I think is best for my kids. Also, all of our styles are named after our immediate family members and often reflect their personalities.”

“I am particularly inspired by unique geometric prints, beautiful color palettes and how existing things are enhanced to create something entirely new. What is most important,” she emphasizes, “is the shared experience between the mom and the kid, as they bond over wearing the same shoe design. We are currently exploring the idea of designing baby’s shoes and apparel as well. This is our vision for Nene Shoes.”

Through one of its women’s lines, Nene Shoes was able to help support an indigenous tribe in the Philippines, and they will soon be partnering with the Children’s Museum of the Arts in NYC for New York Fashion Week.

My children and I love Sugarfina, the divinely magical candy boutique in the Time Warner Center where the shops at Columbus Circle are. How creative to sell packaged little candies from all over the world and place them in a gorgeous bento box!

Truth be told I actually discovered it with my BFF Lauren Lawrence, we were attending a cocktail party on the higher floors….and I told her I just had to leave early to visit the candy shop….she agreed and off we went together purchasing goodies to take home.

image

I have always had a long term affair with sugar, I just love it, I don’t make excuses for it….I just enjoy it, and delight when some new confection comes along that is fun! Sugarfina is fun…..you can select your own candy of choice and put it in your candy bento box.

image

My children and I especially enjoy the Champagne Gummy Bears, the Sugarfina Pearls, the Champagne Bubbles, and the Ice Cream Cones.

image

The candies are premium and made with the finest ingredients, sourced directly from artisan candy makers around the globe.

The highly curated shop gets Old Fashioned Moms approval for originality and taste.

My son is a devout Republican and staunch political aficionado….which lead us to the presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trumps victory speech Tuesday night held at Trumps Briarcliff Manor Golf Club. I have always encouraged my children to be involved and independent with their thoughts as I support them entirely in whatever decisions and choices they make….

The primary season is wrapping up with elections in New Jersey, California, and four other states. Trump told the relatively private crowd, “You’ve given me the honor to lead the Republican Party to victory this fall, and I am going to fight for you, the American people, like nobody has ever fought before. I am not a politician, I am just me. You’re going to see some real great things happen.”

My son, and his friend Evan Sims throughly enjoyed speaking with Al Baldasaro, who is the Chair of the State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs and a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He promised to give a tour of the State House when my son is in New Hampshire for Camp this month….very excited was he!

Cacao 70 offers 30 different varieties of Hot Chocolate…I ordered the “Peru” while both my children ordered the “Belgian” we were all equally delighted with our choices. Being a family that eats chocolate daily, we are a bit snobbish when it comes to taste…Cacao 70 did not disappoint. I highly recommend a visit, it is fun with attentive service and a full menu.

Butterflies Go Free

A Caterpillar’s Life

Beneath their parents’ colorful wings, butterfly and moth caterpillars are eager to show you that they, too, can be amazing.

Do you remember hunting for caterpillars among the leaves, as a child? Now you can look for some astonishingly diverse caterpillars amidst the tropical plants in the greenhouse. Green, yellow or blue, striped or spotted, covered in wax, hair or spines, caterpillars use all sorts of clever tricks to defend themselves – and impress and surprise you!

Learn about this little-known phase in butterflies’ lives, and share the pleasures of “childhood” with the caterpillars at Butterflies Go Free.

~~~~~
My family and I marveled at the friendliness and comfort the butterflies displayed as they landed ever so gently on our hands. The colorful beauties were a sight to behold and the highlight of the Gardens. This is a wonderful place to expose children to flora and fauna.
