“My Father’s Path to Freedom”

I have been blessed in my career to meet many extraordinary people, often previously unsung heroes, who are doing remarkable and selfless things for often people they do not know. I think these individuals, coming from all walks of life, are what drive me to try to make a difference any way I can. Having been to many corners of the earth in my journalistic work, I have seen firsthand the need to improve communities is great, whether it’s due to poverty, the plight of natural disasters or even human trafficking. Beyond my work on air, whether it’s TV or radio, I have always felt the least I can do is lend my voice.

There are many wonderful charities I have been involved with over the years including St. Francis Food Pantries, D.A.R.E., American Friends of Laniado Hospital, Blue Card, National Meningitis Association, Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, ACE (Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless), David Lynch Foundation, Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club, USO and Wounded Warrior Project. These last ones have a deep, personal meaning to me and my own family history and reinforce why I love this country so much and what it represents to the world.

My own journey started when I was a young child and first recognized seeing the scars on my father’s body, etched like cracks in dried mud. Being an inquisitive child, I asked my mother about them, and she quickly responded that my father went through tough timed growing up, and “we don’t talk about it.” The door was closed for literally decades until a startling discovery only a few years ago of an old tan, battered suitcase… and the contents inside that changed my life forever.

I found a red and white fighting Polish armband, covered with blood and dirt, also a card with codenames on it, a rusty tag with a prisoner number emblazoned on it… and a card of an ex-POW named Ryszard Kossobudzki. At that moment, I was overcome with emotion and the revelations before me. I knew it was time to learn all I could about my aging father’s secret past before it was too late. What I learned from my father filled me with immense pride for his courage, and for the bravery of the US troops who saved his life.

He was 13 when the Nazis brutally attacked his beloved homeland of Poland and at age 15, my father decided to stay and fight, knowing the chances of survival against this ruthless enemy were slim. After more than five years of war and months in a POW camp, my father escaped, weighing just 90 pounds and standing nearly six feet tall. An American pilot finally spotted the walking skeletons and sent down a note wrapped around a chocolate bar, tied with a red ribbon, saying they had 15 miles to walk and “you’re free.” The starving POWs ran to a riverbed, and on the other side, were young GIs who told them their nightmare was finally over. My Polish father knew few words in English and could only say “thank you.” But he knew immediately that the United States is the greatest country in the world because it represents freedom and security not just for the people of Poland, but for everyone.

I have always profoundly appreciated our military men and women and often seen them in action in remote war-torn regions of the world. But since learning of my father’s incredible journey, every time I see a young person put on that uniform, I wonder what persecuted individuals they may save in devastated parts of the globe and if these young faces look similar to the ones my father saw across that riverbed on the luckiest day of his life. For this reason, I often wipe away tears when I greet our active duty troops or veterans, as they are constant reminders of the best this country represents. These are people, like my father, willing to die for freedom, not just for our country, but for others they don’t know, thousands of miles away. They fight with bullets and tanks, the least I can do is fight passionately with a microphone to make sure these heroes and their families are never forgotten.

Rita Cosby wrote a bestselling book about her father entitled, “Quiet Hero”.

On Wednesday, April 22, Martha Stewart hosted the sixth Martha Stewart Center for Living 2015 Gala, bringing to life the importance of health care accessibility to older adults for the sixth year. The gala included a panel discussion moderated by Maria Bartiromo, Global Markets Editor, FOX Business Network/FOX News Channel.

The discussion focused on the Mobile Acute Care Team (MACT), an innovative program being piloted by Mount Sinai to provide patients in need with acute care in-home. Bartiromo moderated the panel with Albert L. Siu, MD, Chairman of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai and Audrey K. Chun, MD, Medical Director of the Martha Stewart Center for Living within the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. The event raised nearly $500,000 for the Center.

Following the panel, Stewart presented several honorees with the “Living Award,” an honor bestowed each year to someone who has made a substantial and positive impact on the public good.

The Martha Stewart Center for Living (MSCL) serves to promote and facilitate access to health care resources for older adults and to enhance the public perception of aging. Through the MSCL, patients and their caregivers have access to programs and resources appropriate for their needs and interests. These may include medical care, healthy living activities, educational programs, caregiver support, and community referrals through the most up-to-date technologies and evidence-based information.

Perlier
I have fallen madly in love with Perlier’s Imperial Honey Silk Talcum Powder. It is amazingly soft and gentle to the skin. Perlier offers a vast selection of products… please visit www.perlier.com

Perlier’s success is primarily attributed to their on-going commitment to research. Although the Research Center calls upon university laboratories and dermatological centers in Milan and Turin, the most important and basic part of the scientific research is carried out in the company’s own Biological Research Center, LA CARIGNANA. Under the strict guidance of Professor Proserpio, of Turin University, and Professor Bonadeo, at the University of Milan, each a Scientific Research Director in Chemical and Cosmetic Technology, approximately 40 scientists, researchers and technicians (botanists, biologists, agronomists, physicians, and chemists and pharmacists), carry out a vertically integrated research activity. Located near Turin, Italy, La Carignana Estate houses Perlier Natural Recipes Corporate offices, Biological Research Laboratories and Agricultural Experimental Center. Here, on over 150 acres of land, free of pesticides and insecticides, Perlier cultivates under strict control, the plants, flowers and honey from which the ingredients are taken for their preparations. This provides fresh plants for scientific research and the industrial production.

Last weekend my family and I visited my beautiful friend Princess Amanda Borghese on Amelia Island. The Borghese name is displayed throughout Italy, including Florence at the Palazzo Borghese, Siena, where the family began and Rome where the name is most prominent.
Princess Amanda Borghese and Michelle-Marie Heinemann, Hyacinth Cornelia Heinemann and Hudson Cornelius Heinemann

Rome’s largest Park, Villa Borghese Gardens, was owned by the family until 1902, and one of Rome’s largest museums, Galleria Borghese, holds the family’s art collection. One of Rome’s most famous streets is also named after the family, Via di Fontanella Borghese and the family has a private chapel in one of Rome’s most famous basilicas, Santa Maria Maggiore.

American born Amanda is married to Prince Francesco Marco Luigi Costanzo Borghese, who’s paternal Grandmother was Princess Marcella Borghese. They met at a wedding in Florence Italy while Amanda was living in Madrid….and the rest is history in the making!

Amelia Island is located just off the coast of Northeast Florida. There are 13-miles of beautiful beaches, abundant native wildlife and unique history. Amanda graciously showed us all the fabulous shops, restaurants and beautiful scenery…and arranged a magnificent luncheon at the Marina where her eldest son Skip drove his boat over from Jacksonville with his family to attend. It was such a lovely day and apparent was Amanda’s love for family and bringing people together to celebrate life.
Amanda is an amazing Woman and Mother, she adores her three children and her positive energy radiates into everyone she meets.

Her ultra successful company comes as no surprise as Perlier, one of the most prestigious Italian product lines that specializes in bath and body treatments was the first of its kind to be launched into the world of electronic retailing. The company has been going strong for 22 years and Amanda and Skip are the companies spokespersons. They are brilliant together and can be seen monthly on the HSN channel.

The products are amazing! Amanda sent me home with bags filled with the most luxurious creams, powders, elixirs, lotions, soaps and bath gels. One of my favorites is the Imperial Honey pure silk talcum powder….I smell like a fresh honey blossom and it feels like heaven on my skin. The Perlier line is synonymous with outstanding quality and true opulence.

Years ago Amanda wrote a compressive hardcover coffee table book on Flowers titled “Flowers from my heart.” It is a beautiful book describing the language of Flowers, their myths, history, medicinal, astrological and spiritual aspects. I love Flowers so much I named my daughter Hyacinth, so for me this book encompasses everything extraordinary about Flowers and their ability to be so much more than looking pretty.

Thank you Princess Amanda for your open heart, beautiful spirit and gracious manner that welcomed us to Amelia Island. We love and adore you….

We here at Old Fashioned Mom are proud to introduce Princess Amanda Borghese as our seventh Celebrity Mother!

1. How would you describe yourself?

At heart – a spiritual person, who passionately loves her family, friends, her life, and her Creator. I live in constant “gratitude” for all of the above – as THAT is what Life’s true meaning is to ME. I am also an entrepreneur, a searcher of truth, and a perfectionist. I love, love, love: history, travel, good food, the beauty of Nature, art and architecture, music, movies, romance, a good sense of humor and all that is mysterious! And…I love learning about anything!

2. Please tell us about your children?

As far as my relationship with them – we are all very close. I am truly blessed with children who are beautiful inside and out – they are compassionate, caring, thoughtful, passionate in work and in life, and they, each one, want to make the world a better place!! They do not “talk” it – they live it! I am very proud of them.

3. What surprised you most about being a Mother?

That my children would be born in Italy – and that there were such things as “Midwives” in this day and age! I thought Midwives were things of the past. As far as “surprises” – everything surprised me about them! I was not prepared to be a Mom….in school, you are taught everything, but not child rearing! Every day I learned something NEW from my children – how to look at the world thru their eyes, and how to be completely flexible, since their needs and wants changed by the minute. It was fascinating.

4. Do you enjoy cooking for your family? If so, what are their favorite dishes?

I have never enjoyed cooking day to day things. I esp. like “baking’ – desserts, for example. More than cooking, I enjoy when the family can get together – and that usually means around a special meal – Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, etc. I find that when I have family over I want to be part of the conversation and fun. If I have to cook, I cannot do that, easily!! I usually have these meals catered, but I will almost always do the dessert! Their favorite desserts are OUR DELIGHT and my RUM CAKE – both secret family recipes!

5. You are a true beauty….can you share your beauty secrets?

I have been the spokesperson (along with my son,Skip) for Perlier Bath & Body products – a line from Italy – on HSN, for almost 20 years. My two favorite products – which I call: “Secrets from the Fountain of Youth” are Perlier’s Honey Royal Elixir and Hydro-Zone.

The Royal Elixir is the only product of its kind – in the WORLD – with pure, living Royal Jelly. Even with modern technology, scientists have not been able to recreate Royal Jelly in the Lab. Its secret has eluded them – yet Perlier has been able to bring this magical formula to our skin, by encapsulating the living Royal Jelly – a Patent that only Perlier owns! The skin appears to get younger before your very eyes.

A clinical study actually showed a 10-fold INCREASE in the skin’s collagen production when using the Royal Elixir!! No other cosmetic company can boast such results.

Hydro-Zone is called the “intelligent hydrator” or the “smart serum”. Perlier was able to take the secret from the Rose of Jericho – which releases moisture on the skin – when , where, and how much the skin needs! The Rose of Jericho is a small, green, evergreen-like plant which can live up to 50 years without water. After years of no water, the Rose of Jericho becomes dried up and brown, yet it can pick up its roots, out of the ground, and roll, like a little tumble weed, across the plains, or desert, until it finds water. Once it finds water, it replants itself, and becomes totally hydrated again, and turns bright green! Its ability to retain enough moisture to live up to 50 years WITHOUT water, is what Perlier’s technology has recreated – a moisturizer to give the skin moisture, where, how much, and when it needs it! This is a “must-have” moisturizer for ANY skin, and works with any other skin regime. It prepares the skin , the way one prepares a canvas before painting – making it uniform in moisture and feel. The skin looks moist and youthful.

6. Please tell us about your family traditions?

We love TRAVELING/VACATIONING together. We plan many family vacations together. This summer we are taking 3 homes, next to each other, on an island in the Caribbean. Two years ago we took a large villa in Tuscany, for the entire family, and before that, a large villa in Lucca. We LOVE being and doing things together! What makes it work, and fun is that we all have a sense of adventure and we are always up for discovery!!

Catherine Painvin - Old Fashioned Mom Magazine

  Catherine Painvin

Tartine et Chocolate … Once upon a time there was …
a desire to surround tiny babies in comfort and dress little children in tender, chic, yet unpretentious clothing, Catherine Painvin founded Tartine et Chocolat in 1977. The exclusive Garda motif and Tartine et Chocolat stripe set the tone for the brand. It was a mini-revolution that succeeded in shaking the children’s fashion market to the core.

The brand went on, in its own time, to develop its product ranges of soft toys, fragrances, children’s bedroom furniture, etc.., and soon established itself as a leader in the high-quality children’s gift market.

The woman responsible for this renaissance, Emilie Zannier, gave Tartine et Chocolat a unique, contemporary interpretation. She rewrote the history book, giving it a new, original and uncompromising twist, establishing a timeless modernity for the brand. She successfully created a fantasy world in which to dramatize the new Tartine et Chocolat collections.

Celebrate Traditions

Carving pumpkins at Halloween and watching fireworks on the Fourth of July are part of our national culture. Holding neighborhood barbecues and New Year’s Day pot lucks provide us opportunities to meet and get to know our neighbors. Baking special birthday cakes and setting the table with a birthday tablecloth create a sense of belonging in families.

These are all traditions. Traditions are rituals that help us build support, connection and caring in our families, neighborhoods, schools and communities. Celebration of traditions creates a common bond and builds community. Often we celebrate traditions without realizing how they started or why they are important. Think about the traditions in your life. What are they? Why do you celebrate them?

Traditions can be created by intentional words or deeds to value a person or event in our life. If you want to learn more about older traditions, consult with elders to find out about the traditions of their childhood. Ask older members of your family or neighbors what they used to do. Think of what they say. Would it be fun to start a new-older tradition? Consider dropping May Day baskets on May 1 or eating black eye peas on New Year’s Day. Reviving something old will link older generations to today’s youth.

Celebration of traditions gives us a positive sense of self. Traditions that are based in our cultural heritage give us a sense of who we are and where our ancestors came from. Weaving cultural heritage activities throughout our daily lives roots us with a sense of purpose and promotes family togetherness. Working together with grandchildren, children, and parents to cook special foods, to sing songs, to dance ceremonial dances, and to hear family stories connects family members and preserves their heritage for future generations.

To preserve your traditions or to start new ones, follow these guidelines:
• Keep your traditions simple.
• They should be fun, inexpensive and not time consuming.
• Provide opportunities for all to be involved, from the youngest to the oldest.
• Look at your interests as a group and create an activity based in this interest.

Discuss your thoughts with all family members including the children. Ask for their suggestions on what to do or how to improve something you are already doing. Rituals don’t need to be complex to be meaningful. Finally, you may also want to start a traditions journal with your family to record the current traditions you celebrate all year long. In your journal, write all about it. Include recipes, pictures, and a brief description of your activities. Future generations will maintain and continue the tradition if there is a written record. Families with a strong sense of traditions and special celebrations are more likely to raise kids who have a strong sense of identity, are healthy, have close ties to family members, and succeed in school.

This is a great time of year to focus on traditions, either experiencing them through the holidays or including them in a New Years’ resolution. May your holidays be filled with your best traditions!

Here is a delicious deviled eggs recipe to share with your children!!
Thanks to Sandra Lee at foodnetwork.com

Deviled Eggs

Straight Up Deviled Eggs!

INGREDIENTS
1 dozen eggs
1/4 cup mayonnaise, or yogurt as a healthy alternative
1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons bacon bits or crumbled bacon, for garnish, optional

DIRECTIONS

Put the eggs in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then turn off the heat, cover and let sit for 15 minutes. Drain the water from the pot and fill with cold water to cool the eggs. Change the water twice so that the eggs will cool down quickly.

Peel the eggs and slice a small piece off the bottoms so that they will stand upright. Slice the top third off of each and save the tops. Carefully remove the eggs yolks with a small spoon and put them in a medium-size bowl. Break up the egg yolks with a potato masher. Add all the remaining ingredients except the bacon and chives. Mix until well blended and smooth.

Transfer the mixture to a releasable bag, cut off the corner of the bag and pipe the filling into each egg. Sprinkle each with chopped chives and bacon bits, if desired. Cover with the egg tops and arrange them on a serving platter.

The Leopard Lounge….located in the Chesterfield Hotel in Palm Beach at 363 Cocoanut Row, is really one of my favorite places to have dinner with the family. The food is fresh and delicious using the finest local and seasonal ingredients and the staff is extraordinarily attentive. There is live entertainment every night which my children especially enjoy that creates a lively and spirited mood. There is also a fabulous range of wine, spirits, cocktails and they have their own home made flavored vodkas. The pineapple martini is divine!

Set your taste buds alight in the Leopard’s Lair

The legendary and newly refurbished Leopard Lounge, one of Palm Beach’s best loved institutions, is the epitome of sleek sophistication. Jet black lacquered walls, window blinds, granite topped tables, leather banquette seating and chairs, are perfectly complemented by a leopard skin patterned carpet, beveled mirrors, punkah fans and the richly swirling white and red images of the decadent hand painted ceiling.

Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between, the menu features an eclectic mix of classic American, English, Oriental and International dishes prepared with flair and imagination by
Executive Chef Gerard Coughlin. Breakfast and lunch can also be enjoyed on the courtyard patio or by the pool.

Lunchtime favourites include their famous Aberdeen Angus Beef Burgers served with the fresh topping of your choice and a wire basket of crispy fries, their inspired Leopard Club Sandwich with avocado and hard-boiled egg, and Bea’s Chicken Noodle Soup – a velvety smooth bowl of delicious goodness created by the founder, Bea Tollman.

Signature dinner dishes include the Veal Chop and the 14oz boneless New York Strip, both cooked to perfection in a 900° wood burning Josper Grill. The searing heat produces a lightly charred outer layer that locks in all the natural juices and rich flavor to create an unforgettably appetizing taste experience. The South African Style Chicken Curry, prepared with a special mix of 10 exotic spices and served with fragrant jasmine rice, crispy poppadoms and tangy mango chutney, is equally popular.

Diners also love their signature Maryland Style Lump Crab Cakes. Made from genuine lump crab meat, lightly breaded then pan seared to a golden brown and drizzled with our Chili Lime Mayonnaise, they’re a delicious appetizer.

Bartenders are minor celebrities in their own right and every night they provide some of the finest live entertainment in all of Palm Beach – this is definitely the place to be seen, to dance the night away, or to just sit back and soak up the atmosphere.

Ron BurkhardtPhilanthropist and Artist Ron Burkhardt is the genius behind The Notism Movement. A method of painting that exhalts the Beauty of Memory and is symbolic of primal loss; the fading reality of nature’s perfection.

The hieroglyphic scribbles and scrawls in his work manifest in a unique pictorial language that reflects urgent efforts to preserve our personal histories and rapidly fleeting histories.

I first met Ron at a luncheon given by a mutual friend at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. We immediately bonded over art and our common interest in various charities.

Throughout the history of the world, important needs have been filled by volunteers, people working for the common good of others. These individuals are essential to the well being of people everywhere. Ron is a wonderful example of this. His charities that he is involved with include: South Hampton Hospital, Project Angel Food, Eisenhower Medical Center, Children’s Cancer and Blood Foundation, Children’s Development Center of the Hampton’s, and African Child Foundation.

Giving back to the community is very important to Ron as he has made it a priority to help those around him and positively impact those in need providing a renewed sense of hope.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to his Art Studio. The view from his work space overlooks Lake Worth and manicured Versailles styled gardens in Palm Beach, the perfect inspiration for his recently created “letterscape” masterpieces.

My son Hudson immediately selected his favorite as did my daughter Hyacinth. For me, it was somewhat difficult as there were several paintings that I fell completely in love with.

Ron has received over 200 awards for creative excellence and his work has been honored by The United Nations, Palm Springs International Film Festival, and Hollywood International Broadcast awards to name a few.

Each day I am moved and inspired by the generosity and creativity of people like Ron Burkhardt who genuinely want to leverage their wealth for the common good.
