Australian designer Marc Newson has teamed up with design-powerhouse Louis Vuitton to create what is possibly the  most advanced and chic line of carry-on luggage,  catering to discriminating travelers.  This new rolling-line of iconic Louis suitcases are constructed in a manner that keeps them extremely light and compact, with a retractable handle and flat top that is designed for aerodynamic efficiency.

Newson describes his design as “something that’s very, very, very, light and very strong, but also provides the maximum volume of space, of usable space.”

The material of the bags is not carbon, but a woven material that is recyclable and semi-flexible, making it slightly pliable and extremely durable.  In addition to its Monogram and Damier canvases, the bag will also be available in seven bright colors of Epi leather.

“The process of traveling tomorrow could be a little more elegant and a little more seamless and a little more enjoyable.“ – Marc Newson

The new Louis Vuitton carry-on luggage line revives the revolutionary spirit of the luxury brand that goes back to the fashion house’s creation of the flat-topped trunk that could be stacked in both trains and boats.  While the more familiar “Louis” bags have changed very little in the past, their level of luxurious durability and quality proceeds them.

The new luggage collection is now available on the Louis Vuitton online boutique.

Mexico’s seductive alchemy of stunning landscapes, alluring white sand beaches, thriving cities, colorful villages, and ancient cultures might be reason for the initial attraction, but the modern art and architecture scene might be what actually captures the heart and soul. Writer Annie Kelly, who has created a series of gorgeous books about the art, architecture, and style of the region, together with her photographer husband Tim Street-Porter, gives an intimate look inside the beauty of Mexico through vivid imagery and captivating writing.

Conceived and created as a way to explore the vibrant color and style of Mexico, Casa Mexico, San Miguel, and Casa Mexicana all feature lush photography and vivid writing that takes you, the reader, on a mental journey as you flip through the pages and explore the colors, shapes, and textures of the Yucatán, San Miguel de Allende, and other stunning Mexican towns and villages.

Living in Mexico means that you’re surrounded by beauty and wonder from all sources. With the natural raw beauty of the landscapes, the ancient wonders of the pre-Columbian civilizations, and the modern spirit of today’s artists, architects, and designers, the country is a fount of inspiration for creatives of all kinds – so it is no wonder that artists, designers, architects, and writers have been drawn to the cities and villages of Mexico for centuries.

The Yucatán: Ancient Traditions Translated Into Contemporary Style

One of the best ways to get a taste of the style of Mexico is by exploring the Yucatán – starting with the city of Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán state and a vibrant city surrounded by Mayan ruins and traditional haciendas. In fact, this is one of the places that first drew the author to the country; the exquisite Mayan ruins and their accompanying mythology, the gracious haciendas, and the creative soul of the communities in the Yucatán are what sparked her imagination to create books like Casa Mexicana.

Described by the author as “always joyful, always deeply inspirational”, the Yucatán has a beauty and splendor all its own. With roots in Mayan culture and an undeniably fun -oving spirit, it is a wonderful place to live or visit, whether in person or via the pages of Casa Mexico, which take the reader inside some of the region’s most exquisite homes and noteworthy properties.

Life is lived outdoors in many cities in temperate or tropical Mexico, where a mix of Mayan, Aztec, indigenous or native Mexican, American, and European cultures blend into a melting pot of art, style, and fantastic living. Today, there are two distinct styles or schools of thought when it comes to current Mexican design and architecture options.

Two Schools Of Modern Mexican Design

Unknown-2

The first is a classic or “resort” style that is the focus of popular architects like Manolo Mestre, Arcadio Marin, and the firm Reyes, Rios & Larrain-Lagos, who take traditional elements evocative of ethnic or indigenous culture and update them with modern materials and conveniences. This is perhaps the most recognized style or the way that one expects luxurious Mexican homes to look, based on the styles of the popular high end resorts on the coasts.

“A spectacular ruin, a colorful town, or a grand hacienda. All these play their part in the mystery that is the Yucatán peninsula.” says Kelly. Many of the nineteenth century Yucatán haciendas featured in Casa Mexicana were designed or renovated by the aforementioned architects, and others inspired by their picturesque style, faded grandeur, and implicit sense of history.

The fashion world’s elegant hideaways of the Coqui Coqui resorts in Tulum and Coba (designed by Nicolas Malleville) are also excellent examples of this style, along with a number of other beachfront properties in Tulum near the Mayan ruins and the Sian Ka’an biosphere. Further inland, Hacienda Petac, Hacienda Uayamon, Hacienda Santa Rosa De Lima, and Hacienda de Temozon are all wonderful places to visit in and around Mérida.

The Yucatán is also home to artists like Javier Marín, whose studio on the outskirts of the country village of San Antonio Sac Chich was designed by his architect brother Arcadio Marín as a temple to the arts – described by Kelly as a “Mexican Acropolis”. Set amidst a man-made lake surrounded by lush native vegetation that was purposefully left sans-landscaping, this classically proportioned stone structure is a place for the artist and his students to live and work – creating some of the masterpieces of modern Mexican art and design.

The second school of thought is a modernist, contemporary art-centric style that was born in the cosmopolitan galleries and studios of Mexico City and is still primarily centered in that area, although a number of architects and designers from all over Mexico and around the world focus on developing that aesthetic.

Mexican Style Beyond The Yucatán

Another Annie Kelly book, Casa San Miguel, focuses on the mountain town of San Miguel de Allende, situated in central Mexico and known as artists colony and home to artists and writers of all nationalities, along with visitors from around the world drawn by the remarkable architecture and colorful streets of the old town.

Finally, there is Casa Mexicana, a book that takes the reader on a visual voyage around the country, highlighting the beauty of each region along with the unique styles, history, and characteristics of each region.

If these books inspire you to take a trip or even invest in a home in Mexico, the author recommends focusing on one particular region; ideally one of the the areas popular with ex-pats like the Yucatán and the Caribbean coast, Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido, San Miguel de Allende, or Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo on the Pacific Coast.

Furthermore, while the books mention a number of artists, designers, and architects who are working today to create and renovate new homes in Mexico, Annie also recommends visiting the markets and galleries in these cities yourself and collecting pottery, fabrics, and other pieces that speak to you, and working with a designer to build your own vision of Mexican style. The architects mentioned in the books can connect with designers who know all the finest local artisans and craftsmen.

Or even if you’re just dreaming of the style, the stunning images in these books will transport you to the Yucatán, San Miguel de Allende, and other spectacular locations south of the border.  Annie Kelly’s books are a love letter to one of the most intriguing, stunning countries in the world, and they take you on a visual journey through the colors, sights, and textures of living a la Mexicana.

Annie Kelly is also responsible for L.A. Modern, Litchfield Style: Classic Country Houses of Connecticut, and the Rooms to Inspire series, along with writing for Interiors and New York magazine, and a number of other publications. Her next book will be focused on Bali, Indonesia.

HAVE YOUR CUP OF COFFEE READY

How often has someone told you, “Coffee isn’t good for you.” Haters gonna hate.

Thing is, the science doesn’t agree.

Each year, a new independent study is released on the health benefits of coffee. They say coffee can help reduce our risk of dementia and melanoma cancer. Other studies have said coffee is good for our gut health.

A new study published in Nature Medicine gives all of us caffeine-addicted, coffee lovers another reason to grab that second cup.

PAIN PAIN GO AWAY

In an interview with Time Magazine, the study author David Furman, consulting associate professor at the Institute for Immunity, Transplantation and Infection at Stanford University said,

“The more caffeine people consumed, the more protected they were against a chronic state of inflammation.”

Why is this important?

The older we get, the less efficient our body becomes. Certain functions slow down, and then, in the case of inflammation, what was once a benefit can become a detriment to our health.

“Inflammation is our body’s defense mechanism to protect us from infection and injury. The purpose is to “localize and eliminate the injurious agent and to remove damaged tissue components so that the body can begin to heal.” – Britannica.com

But as we age, the inflammation that once helped our body heal begins to harm our us.

THE GOOD NEWS FOR COFFEE DRINKERS

We will always take more good news, amiright?

According to the Time article;

People who drank more than five cups of coffee a day showed extremely low levels of activity in the inflammatory gene pathway. Caffeine inhibits this circuit and turns the inflammatory pathway off, the researchers say.

CONCLUSION

The consumption of coffee plays a role in reducing inflammation thereby, allowing our bodies more effectively to combat disease. More research is being done by the group, stay tuned.

Rejoice, coffee lovers — yet another study confirmed that the brew is good for your health. The study, from the National Cancer Institute, found that coffee drinkers — even those who pound back cup after cup — are less likely to die early than non-drinkers. And even better — this protection applies to coffee consumers of any kind, including decaf and instant coffee fans. The wide-ranging study evaluated ten years of data from more than half a million people in Britain, who elected to take part in a large genetic study. Each participate had their blood drawn, and answered questions about their health and lifestyle. Researchers grouped the participants based on how many cups of coffee they drank each day, and then looked to see how many deaths occurred within those groups. Regardless of gender, the 502,641 participants aged 38 to 73 fared better with more java.

Part of the study looked at people who have the coffee gene, meaning they’re able to metabolize caffeine quickly. People with it are able to drink caffeine late in the day, while others have to cut themselves off if they want to sleep at night, or to avoid feeling jittery during the day.

But they found that having the coffee gene, and downing more of the caffeinated variety, did not have any negative effects on mortality. It’s also encouraging news for those without the coffee gene, as it confirmed that they can drink decaf and still reap the longevity benefits — though they did find that the associations with caffeinated, ground coffee were “generally stronger.”

“Coffee drinking was inversely associated with mortality, including among those drinking 8 or more cups per day and those with genetic polymorphisms indicating slower or faster caffeine metabolism,” the researchers wrote in the study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Internal Medicine. “These findings suggest the importance of non-caffeine constituents in the coffee-mortality association and provide further reassurance that coffee drinking can be a part of a healthy diet.”

This study comes three months after a Los Angeles judge ruled that California coffee shops must post a warning sign that the drink poses an increased risk of cancer. The decision came after a non-profit group, the Council for Education and Research on Toxics, argued that the levels of acrylamide, a chemical produced in the coffee roasting process, posed a significant threat to consumers.

However, cancer researchers said that the amount of acrylamide in coffee is unlikely to do any harm, and it is also present in foods like potatoes and bread.

“There’s some acrylamide in coffee, but we’re talking about very, very low levels. Trace amounts,” Dr. Geoffrey Kabat, a cancer epidemiologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and author of Getting Risk Right, told PEOPLE. “This decision scares people, it keeps people focused on the wrong things and it provides no useful guidance for what people should do.”

What you must know about this cake is that it is just like a french macaron, but in cake form. You have a chocolate cake base and caramel meringue buttercream frosting that to me imitates a macaron cookie. It’s loaded with light and fluffy whipped egg whites, sugar, butter, bourbon caramel goodness and so much milk chocolate.

  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons strong brewed coffee hot
  • homemade or store bought macarons for decorating

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 7 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into chunks
  • 2/3 cup full fat canned coconut milk may use heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt

MILK CHOCOLATE MERINGUE BUTTERCREAM

  • 6 eggs whites
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 sticks (1 1/2 cups) unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup bourbon caramel from recipe above
  • 6 1/2 ounces milk chocolate melted + cooled slightly
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

DARK CHOCOLATE GANACHE

    • 2 1/2 ounces dark chocolate chopped
    • 1/4 full fat canned coconut milk or heavy cream
    • 2 tablespoons Kahlua may sub 1 tablespoon vanilla

INSTRUCTIONS

CAKE

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease three 8-inch (or 9 inch) round cake pans, or line with parchment paper, then butter/spray with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium size bowl combine the flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer (or use a hand held mixer) beat together the eggs, buttermilk, greek yogurt, canola oil and vanilla until smooth. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients with the mixer on low until there are no longer any clumps of flour. Add the hot coffee and mix until combined. Batter should be pourable, but not super thin.
  4. Pour the batter among the 3 cake pans and bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the tops are just set and no longer wiggly in the center. Remove and let cool five minutes, then run a knife around the edges of the pan. Grab 3 large flat plates, line them with wax or parchment paper and invert the cakes onto the paper lined plates. Cover and let the cakes cool completely before frosting.

BOURBON CARAMEL

  1. In a dry, large deep heavy skillet cook the sugar over moderately high heat, stirring constantly with a heat proof rubber spatula until the sugar is melted and turns a deep golden caramel, remove the skillet from the heat and add the chunks of butter one by one, whisk until combined. The caramel will bubble, this is ok. Now slowly add the cream and then whisk until combined. Return the pot to the heat and, cook the mixture over moderate heat, stirring until the caramel has thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the heat, if using, add the bourbon + a pinch of salt. Set the caramel aside to cool.

MILK CHOCOLATE MERINGUE BUTTERCREAM

  1. Bring a large pot (big enough to place your mixing bowl over top) of water to boil. In the bowl of a stand mixer whisk the egg whites and sugar together. Place the bowl of the stand mixer over the pot of boiling water and cook, stirring often, until the egg whites are very warm to the touch and the sugar has dissolved, remove the bowl from the heat. Whip the egg whites on high until stiff peaks form. Allow the egg whites to cool before continuing.
  2. Once cool, add the butter, caramel, melted milk chocolate and cocoa powder. Beat until combined and fluffy.

TO ASSEMBLE

  1. Place 1 layer, flat side up, on a plate or cake stand. With a knife or offset spatula, spread the top with frosting. Place the second layer on top, rounded side up, and spread the frosting evenly on the top. Finally, add the third cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake. Place the cake in the fridge to chill for at least an hour.
  2. Meanwhile, make the ganache. In a microwave safe bowl add the chocolate and cream. Microwave on high for 30 second intervals, stirring between each until melted. Stir in the Kahlua. Allow the ganache to cool 10 minutes, and then pour the ganache onto the middle of the chilled cake and spread to just the sides, allow the ganache to drip down the sides of the cake. Place the cake in the fridge, preferably overnight, but at least 1 hour. Allow the cake to sit at room temp for at least an hour before serving. If desired, drizzle the cake with any remaining caramel and decorate with [homemade | https://www.halfbakedharvest.com/frozen-hot-fudge-peanut-butter-swirled-pretzel-macarons/] or store bought macarons. Can also decorate with sprinkles, chocolate curls or whatever your heart desires.
