If you have a favorite SoulCycle instructor in the Hamptons, it’s time to make a change. Yes, we get that you’ve been heading to the East End since you were four, but maybe give some newbies a chance? You know, while switching up the scene for yourself. Think of a new summer town as Vintner’s Daughter for the soul. Instead of repeating your seasonal routine, list your Hamptons house on Airbnb and use your gains to travel somewhere that you haven’t Instagrammed into oblivion.
Use this calculator to estimate how much you could earn this summer by not being so predictable it hurts. Keeping Hamptons standards of beach, shopping, and food in mind, we’ve curated the best places to manifest destiny. Maybe you’ll discover your new annual favorite!
Nantucket
Nantucket means hydrangeas, overs and vehicle permit stickers, and grey cedar shingles. Go for the Nantucket Comedy Festival. Go for Boston Pops. Or embrace tradition and go to the Chicken Box and see everyone you know from prep school. Shop on the Straight Wharf and see…everyone you know from prep school. Go to Cru and see…Lord Disick? If you’re lucky, your exploits will be chronicled by @chadtucket.
Kiawah Island
If you usually head out East with the family, Kiawah is a great substitute. With southern food (corn bread at every meal), you’ll want to be with people who love you unconditionally. When you’re not golfing or playing tennis, take a skeet shooting lesson and discover which of your siblings has a secret proclivity for violence. Go on a guided kayaking tour and regret it when they tell you to beware of alligators.
Manhattan Beach
Home to the first LF I ever shopped at circa 2007, Manhattan Beach is great if you happen to be traveling with someone who requires outdoor activities. While you shop and apply SPF, they can bike on The Strand and play volleyball. Go to the pier and take that photo you promised yourself you wouldn’t.
Sea Island
With southern architecture and southern charm, Sea Island is the best escape you’ve never heard of. It has vibes similar to Kiawah, but you’re even less likely to run into anyone you know. Golf and tennis abound so make sure to pack your FaceGym serums. See if listing your summer home can fund a restorative week in Sea Island.
Palm Beach
Palm Beach is for those of you who consider small town charm an affectation. Unabashedly ostentatious, Palm Beach proudly boasts a monument of the gilded age. When not ogling or taking part in conspicuous consumption, visit the artificial Peanut Island or snorkel in the artificial Lake Worth inlet. Palm Beach is @Miquela in place form: fake, but so beautiful you don’t care.
Cape May
If the pedestrian holds some kitsch appeal to you or if you’re up for nostalgia by way of Americana, head to Cape May. Where there were once very few options for fine dining, Cape May is now fluent in farm to table and açai bowls. Pick and choose which elements of a typical Jersey beach town you want to engage with, but admit boardwalk fries, games, and quaint/creepy Victorian inns have an everlasting charm. Don’t forget to buy salt water taffy as a souvenir for all your friends who refuse to leave the East End.
Let’s be honest—we never stopped eating pasta. It plays well with creamy, comforting flavors in colder months, then graciously welcomes warmer temperatures with bright, fresh zest. But while pasta is seasonless, the pasta salad screams summer.
From soba noodles dressed in citrus ginger to tender bow ties sprinkled with red pepper flakes and tomatoes, a cool, big bowl of pasta salad is endlessly versatile. You can plop in whatever farmer’s market bounty you find: cucumbers, carrots, corn, or radishes. Plus, they hold up (even improve!) over time as dressings and ingredients marinate—no wilting or getting soggy. So, now as we’re entering long summer days, we’re piling our plates with these eight beauties.
Cold Vegetable and Noodle Salad with Ponzu Dressing
This is a great way to get acquainted with tart and salty ponzu sauce: tossed with silky udon and a medley of crunchy, fresh vegetables and herbs.
Ingredients:
For the noodle salad:
8 ounces udon noodles
1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1 teaspoon yellow miso
12 ounces extra-firm tofu, pressed and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
4 ears corn
1 cup cooked edamame
1 small head Savoy cabbage, cut into small ribbons, rinsed, and dried
1 cucumber, roughly chopped
3 scallions, green parts only, chopped
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds, or more to taste
Lime wedges, for serving
Basil and mint, torn, for serving
If you love caprese salads but also want to be full an hour after dinner, just add all those tasty components to pasta.
Ingredients:
3 medium red, ripe tomatoes
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 tablespoon good balsamic vinegar
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup loosely packed chopped fresh basil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 pound curly pasta (I like cavatappi)
1 medium ball fresh mozzarella
Orzo Salad with Scallions, Hazelnuts, and Golden Raisins
A make-ahead masterpiece if we’ve ever seen one! You can mix the dressing, plump the raisins, and toast the hazelnuts the night before.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup hazelnuts
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup golden raisins
1 cup orzo
1 lime, juiced
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons champagne vinegar
Kosher salt
1/4 cup sesame oil
2 tablespoons good olive oil, plus more for coating the orzo
6 scallions
Small handful of chives
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 ounces fresh goat cheese
1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt
Macaroni salad gets a new personality. Instead of creamy cheese, coat noodles in peanut butter and miso, then add some spice with vinegar and chili-garlic sauce.
Ingredients:
1 pound whole wheat elbow pasta, or your favorite shape
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (I used natural unsweetened, which is more gritty, but use what you like)
1 heaping tablespoon white miso
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, or rice wine vinegar
1 to 2 teaspoon chili garlic sauce, to taste (get a jar of the Huy Fong and stash it in the fridge — it’s ridiculously good)
2 teaspoons chopped ginger
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tablespoons honey (or less, if using sweetened peanut butter)
3 to 5 dashes sesame oil, to taste
1 bunch scallions, trimmed and sliced
1/2 large watermelon radish, cut into 2-inch sticks
1 medium carrot, peeled and cut into 2-inch sticks
1 cup broccoli florets, blanched or lightly steamed, chopped
8 sprigs fresh cilantro, chopped, legs and all, plus extra for garnish
Roasted peanuts, for garnish
Celebrate tomato season with Michel Guérard’s Genius Sauce Vierge, a gorgeous no-cook tomato sauce. The combination of fresh tomatoes, olive oil, lemon juice, and herbs shines in this simply-dressed pasta salad.
Ingredients:
One batch of Michael Guérard’s Sauce Vierge (link in headnote)
1 pound bow tie (farfalle) pasta, cooked to al dente and drained well
8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced or cubed
1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
1 splash red wine vinegar, or more to taste
Black pepper, to taste
Fresh basil, for garnishing
Here’s an almost no-cook, 5-ingredient salad that will actually help you cool down.
Ingredients:
For the salad::
1/2 pound (usually half a package) noodles
1 pinch salt
1/4 cup thinly sliced red pepper
1/4 cup shredded or thinly sliced carrots
1/4 cup shredded cabbage (or chopped spinach, or some other green)
1 pinch Sesame seeds
If you feel your palate is a bit too sophisticated for an all-out (slash all-you-can-eat) ice cream rager this weekend, don’t worry, you can indulge in a chill, and very Instagrammable, summer treat worthy of your refined tastes.
This weekend only, through June 3rd, chic Nolita hot spot Kay’s Boutique Café is combining their well-known love of Thai-style French Toast with an equally appetizing (and photogenic) foodie favorite – Eggloo!
The Thais-Cream Sandwich fuses Kay’s brûléed vanilla French toast with Thai Tea Ice Cream by Eggloo, and is topped with salted toasted coconut flakes. Beautiful, delicious, and only available at the pop-up ice cream cart in front of Kay’s through Sunday. Certainly a double-tappable way to kick off frozen dessert season.
If there’s one true luxury in this world, it’s delivery. And living your most fabulous life out East just got tons easier. Launching in Hampton Bays, Southampton and beyond, Uber Eatswill be a game changer this season, for sure, continuing to expand its area of coverage throughout the summer.
Too lazy to cook dinner? Need a hangover breakfast, STAT? Impromptu picnic brought to you right on the beach? With delivery in minutes from favorite local spots like 75 Main, Calissa, JT’s Burgers and more, it doesn’t get much better than this.
If you’re a proud basic who trades her autumn pumpkin spice lattes for bottles of rosé come summer, we’ve got some major news.
In honor of National Rosé Day this Saturday, June 9th, Chandon California has teamed up with NYC favorite, The Doughnut Project, to create a sparkling pink dessert pretty much made for the ‘gram. Dubbed, appropriately enough, the ChanDONUT, the boozy treat consists of rosé-hued dough and Chandon Rosé cream filling, glaze and butter cream, all topped off with gold dust and edible rose petals.
The limited edition treat will only be available at The Doughnut Project from Friday, June 8th through Sunday, June 10th. Reason enough to pop open a bottle while you’re at it.
The milk station at your local coffee shop is getting crowded. Where there used to be a few options—whole, half-and-half, and soy, if you were in a certain neighborhood—there’s now a gang of beaked metal birds holding anything from coconut milk to almond milk to rice milk to oat milk to hemp milk to pea milk.
While you may have a specific attraction to one type—almond if you’re allergic to soy, rice if you’re allergic to nuts, oats if you’re concerned about water usage—how do the non-dairy milks stack-up in terms of flavor and texture when stirred into your coffee?
Our friends at Food52 sampled cold brew mixed with four types of milk—soy, almond, rice, and coconut—to see how they compared. Here are their tasting notes:
We couldn’t quite reach a consensus on the non-dairy milk of preference: Almond milk (especially since we used a vanilla-flavored version) made the coffee sweet and drinkable, while rice milk was less overpowering, allowing the coffee’s flavor to come through. Soy milk made the coffee rich and thick, to the point of being “mouth-coaty,” while coconut milk was more watery and did not interfere with the acidity of the coffee.

The ever Instagrammable Supermoon Bakehouse, located on the Lower East Side, has gained local fame for its super unique selection of sweet treats, but their colorful croissants have remained the star of the menu – until now.
Taking all the buttery goodness of your favorite French breakfast, and infusing it in ice cream, Supermoon has just launched a sweet and salty soft serve inspired by the flavors of croissant butter. Cue drool.
Not only does it have super crunchy crumbs sprinkled on top, it comes with a piece of their signature croissant – twice baked, with extra salt, sugar, and, of course, butter. YUM. If you still aren’t sold for some reason, it all comes served in a magical, color-changing cup. Just think of the likes, people.
Ah, the summer of 2016. we developed an obsession with LaCroix en masse, sipping pastel cans of pamplemousse at every Brooklyn rooftop party, unaware of the approaching shitstorm.
But alas, times have changed. Sure, we still love sparkling water (because we’re health conscious) in Instagrammable cans, but LaCroix is, after all, so 2016. These days, cool kids across the city are all about Ugly.
Ugly Drinks have recently hopped across the pond from the U.K., landing in hipsters’ homes up and down the East Coast. The zero-calorie, zero-sugar sparkling water features nothing artificial and comes in three equally as addicting flavors: Cherry, Lemon Lime, and Peach. (Certainly easier to pronounce than “pamplemousse.) Despite the name, the beverage’s packaging is fun and photogenic, but the biggest draw? It’s delivered straight to your door, every month.
Founded by Hugh Thomas and Joe Benn, who met while working at Vita Coca, the brand values transparent messaging – “Ugly” stands for the “ugly truth.”
“The Millennial consumer today has access to all sorts of information on the internet and is able to find out about brands and products, and at this socioeconomic time of uncertainty, lack of truth in the news and in products as well… they just want something that tells the truth,” Thomas, who’s also the CEO, told Food Navigator USA earlier this year.
The subscription-based service ensures that you’ll never run out of the stuff, or be forced to battle it out at your local Whole Foods. A 24-can trial pack is even available for just $8! So go ahead and get Ugly, if only to join the ranks of the cool kids on Insta.
