DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter with both sugars; beat on medium speed until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; add the salt, vanilla, and eggs. Beat until well mixed, about 1 minute. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
2. Drop heaping tablespoon-size balls of dough about 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
3. Bake until cookies are golden around the edges, but still soft in the center, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool on baking sheet 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and let cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature up to 1 week.

“The biggest reason for why I was able to pay off my student loans is because I earned as much money as I could outside of my day job,” she explains on her personal finance and lifestyle blog, Making Sense of Cents. “I mystery shopped and got paid to take surveys, but the biggest thing I did was I made an income through my blog.”
Schroeder-Gardner started Making Sense of Cents while pursuing an MBA in finance. Although she first envisioned it as more of a diary, the site now generates revenue through online classes she teaches on the site, affiliate marketing, and advertising (both company-sponsored ads and display ads).

Craig Newmark moved to San Francisco for a job in computer programming at Charles Schwab. When he was laid off, he made the most of the situation by using his severance package to start a small message board that aggregated events that fellow programmers might be interested in.
With terrific timing, Newmark’s project coincided with the release of the early internet browser Netscape. With the addition of a job-listing section, the site, which eventually became Craigslist, boomed in popularity.
Today, Newmark’s net worth is estimated to be $1.31 billion, according to Forbes.
Alicia Shaffer, Three Bird Nest

“I would have been thrilled to make $100 to $200 a month to pay for my daughter’s dance lessons,” Shaffer told Business Insider. “I was really just trying to make a couple sales a week because I had lost confidence in my ability to start a business.” She ended up exceeding that goal by a long shot.

When he was 16 years old, Michael J. Kittredge crafted a candle made of melted red crayons for his mother as a Christmas gift. After a friend offered to buy the wax creation, Kittredge started making candles in his parents’ garage and selling them at his school and to local businesses in his Massachusetts hometown.
By 1972, Kittredge was paying $80 a month to rent a former paper mill as a workshop. Over time, the primarily wholesale business garnered $1 billion in annual sales. A decade later, he took out a loan to open a retail outlet and factory complex. By the mid-1990s, Yankee Candle had become a household name.
Highly successful to this day, Yankee Candle sold for $1.75 billion to consumer products company Jarden in 2013.

But his side project — which ultimately became Facebook — blossomed into a multibillion-dollar global company. Today, his net worth is estimated to be just under $70 billion.
“I probably learned more coding from random side projects that I did than the courses I took in college,” Zuckerberg said during a town-hall event organized by North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Although he was already an NFL legend, retired football player Al “Bubba” Baker’s second career has been equally successful. After pitching his barbecue rib concept, Bubba’s-Q, on NBC’s “Shark Tank,” the business — which began as a catering company— went from earning $154,000 to bringing in more than $16 million over the course of four years.
“When you have a project that is 30-some years in the making and you finally see it come to fruition — the emotions, it was overwhelming,” Baker told CNBC. In addition to an online shop, there’s a brick-and-mortar Bubba’s-Q restaurant in Avon, Ohio.

At just seven years old, he sold his earliest sketches to neighbors. Wherever he went — including a stint as an ambulance driver in Europe during World War I — he would draw cartoons. Returning to the US after the war, he got a job as an advertising cartoonist.
It didn’t take long for Disney to make it to Hollywood, where he created his most famous character, Mickey Mouse, in 1928.
A new study suggests there is a psychological technique you can use to improve your running performance.
It’s called “cognitive reappraisal.”
It means looking at your activity subjectively like a researcher or journalist.
I have a love-hate relationship with running. I love how healthy and rewarded I feel afterward. But while I’m doing it, I hate every second.
But a psychological trick called “cognitive reappraisal” could be used to make running more enjoyable, according to a new study published in the journal Motivation and Emotion and detailed in the British Psychological Society’s Reader’s Digest.
Cognitive reappraisal is a way of framing your mind to adopt a detached attitude toward the activity, like a journalist who is reporting on it. The technique is commonly used in therapy, where a patient is given exercises to help them recognise negative emotions and to ultimately turn these into positive responses.
A research team from the US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts recruited 24 healthy runners aged 18 to 33 to take part in the experiment, all of whom ran more than more than one run a week that was over nine miles
They all performed three vigorous running tasks of 90 minutes, staying at 75 to 85% of their maximum exertion for the duration.
During the first run, they weren’t given any specific instructions to follow. On the second and third they were told to either distract themselves by thinking of something else, or using the cognitive reappraisal method, where they would try and look at themselves subjectively — as if they were reporting on the exercise as a journalist, or studying the experience as a scientist.
So in this study, instead of thinking “I’m tired,” “my legs hurt,” or “I can’t keep running anymore,” the participants could re-frame their thoughts to think things like: “I’m exercising, I may as well enjoy it” or “if I slow my pace down, I may feel less tired.”
The runners were given reminders throughout the workout to ensure they kept re-framing their minds in this way.
When they tried the distraction method, they reported no difference between that and the control run where they didn’t use any psychological technique. Those who adopted the cognitive reappraisal strategy coped better with the vigorous exercise. They felt they exerted themselves less, and didn’t experience as much of an emotional reaction.
However, there are limitations to the study. For example, it isn’t certain whether the runners really practiced cognitive reappraisal properly. Also, as experienced runners, they may have found the experiments more enjoyable than other people. Less athletic participants may not experience the same effects of psychological tricks.
But the researchers are interested in exploring the idea, particularly if using certain methods can help regulate negative emotions while running.
ZUG, SWITZERLAND — Cryptocurrencies and related-crypto technology have become one of the hottest areas of investment and entrepreneurial activity over the last few years, with billions invested in the sector.
Crypto technology, sometimes called distributed ledger technology or blockchain, could potentially drive efficiencies in existing businesses and create new business opportunities by cutting out middlemen and decentralizing services. Many evangelists liken its game-changing potential to that of the internet.
Despite its decentralizing drive, development of the technology has tended to cluster around certain locations: Silicon Valley, New York, Malta, Gibraltar, Singapore, and Switzerland are all key hubs.
Switzerland is home to “Crypto Valley,” a cluster of companies and foundations in the small town of Zug just outside of Zurich.
Business Insider travelled to Zug last week for the Crypto Valley Conference to find out how the hub developed, how significant it is, and why companies are choosing Switzerland. Here’s what we found:
Zug is around an hour outside of Zurich by train. Google Maps
Zug is a small town about an hour outside of Zurich with a population of around 30,000. The city traditionally centred around agriculture and heavy industry but more recently has become a hotspot for pharmaceutical and medical companies. Shire, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson all have offices here.
Many multinationals are attracted by Zug’s low tax. The region — or “Canton” as it’s known in Swiss parlance — charges just 14% corporation tax. It’s one of the region’s many business-friendly policies.

Zug is too small to have its own airport so to get there you have to fly into Zurich and get the train. The trains run right from the airport and depart pretty regularly.
The journey took about an hour but there are quicker trains if you time it right. The views are pretty stunning along the route: lush countryside, clear lakes, and picture-postcard houses lining the valleys.

The town itself is very small and largely centred around one road that stretches from the business district in the north to the old town in the south. People have been living in the area since 600 AD, although none of the buildings in the old town are that old.

I arrived a day before the conference kicked-off and walked around the town to get a sense of the place. Given the nickname Crypto Valley, I had expected to find shops accepting bitcoin or perhaps even selling crypto merch but it took a while to find any signs of crypto. There were a few flags advertising the upcoming conference but that was about it. Overall, the place felt pretty sleepy.

There was clearly money in the town, though. There were two luxury car dealerships opposite each other on either side of the main road. The sound of high-performance engines punctuated the Swiss calm every so often too as people drove their expensive cars around the town centre.

On the first day I met Jon, the COO of Shapeshift, a cryptocurrency exchange based in the town. (Shapeshift doesn’t disclose the second names of any of its employees for fear of phishing attacks.)
Jon said Shapeshift chose to incorporate in Zug back in 2014 because of the clear stance that it took on cryptocurrency.
“We knew that crypto was a very new thing and various regulators might view it in different ways,” he said. “We wanted to find an environment where we thought it would generally be friendly. We identified Zug, and Switzerland in general, as a place that was open to this type of innovation in this space and we thought it was a good place to set up shop.”

Back in 2014, it was unusual for governments and regulators to open to crypto. Silk Road, the infamous dark web marketplace powered by bitcoin, had only just been shut down by the FBI and crypto exchange MtGox had just collapsed after a catastrophic hack.
Later I learned why Zug was so early to embrace crypto. It was largely because of one man: Nikolas Nikolajsen. Danish-born developer Nikolajsen worked at Credit Suisse in Switzerland before leaving to set up crypto services company Bitcoin Suisse in 2013.
“There were a lot of conversations between the founder [of Bitcoin Suisse] and the government — what is this, what is that?” Bitcoin Suisse CEO Arthur Vayloyan told me. “He was very active in consulting and educating. Many knowledgeable people today know their thing because they were privileged to have [Niklas] as an initiator. He understood.”

After discussions with Nikolajsen and others, Zug put in place clear guidance as to how it would treat cryptocurrency companies and those that dealt with the assets.
“I think clarity, in general, is a good thing for the space,” Shapeshift’s Jon said. “Whatever rules you want to make, at least be clear about them. The Swiss model has generally been pretty good about that.”

The new rules helped attract the team behind ethereum, the second biggest cryptocurrency by value, to Zug. The Ethereum Foundation, which promotes and supports the cryptocurrency, is based in Zug and Bitcoin Suisse helped advise the group on its initial coin offering (ICO) in 2014.
“The whole starting point was the Ethereum Foundation,” Oliver Bussmann, president of the Crypto Valley Association, told Business Insider. “They decided to set up the foundation here and that triggered the set up of a new ecosystem — law firms, tax, accounting, smart contract evolvement firms, startups, universities.”

The Crypto Valley Association was set up at the beginning of 2017 to coordinate all these interested parties.
“There were a lot of informal meet-ups and they had the name already crypto valley,” said Bussmann, who was formerly UBS’ CIO. As well as being a reference to Silicon Valley, Zug actually is in a valley, surrounded by mountains.
Bussmann said: “We are a global leading ecosystem for blockchain technology. To establish that you have to work on all dimensions: startups, investors, governments, corporations, R&D etc. You have to bring them together.”

Today, over 400 companies with a presence in Zug are members of the association. They range from startups to “Big Four” accountant KPMG. Bussmann says last year’s ICO boom supercharged the organisation.
“This country is really good from an innovation perspective,” he said. “But there are not enough VC companies here locally. The government was always thinking about providing a fund, something like that. But now with the ICO, we have access to a global capital market.”
ICOs allow startups to sell digital crypto tokens to investors globally through the internet. 2017 saw an explosion in ICO activity and over $9 billion has been raised through ICOs so far this year alone.

I visited the Crypto Valley Labs on the afternoon of my first day. The Labs are a coworking space for startups, set over two floors in a building in the business district. Jon and the Shapeshift team were huddled in the garden attached to the building when I visited.
Labs was founded at the start of 2018 and already has over 40 paying members. Many use the space as a place to work when they’re in town rather than being based there full-time. The space has been such a success that it is expanding to take up two more floors later this year.

There was a bitcoin ATM in the cafe area of Crypto Valley Labs. As part of its crypto-friendly stance, Zug has begun accepting bitcoin as a form of payment for certain municipal services, although not taxes. The city is also experimenting with allowing municipal voting using blockchain, the technology that underpins bitcoin.

The conference held a drinks event for attendees on the first night at the Sky Lounge, a bar that overlooked the town. Around 80 people gathering first downstairs outside then heading to the bar. I chatted to an Oxford Professor looking at using blockchain to track social impact, a Swiss CEO whose company makes secure storage tech for crypto, and someone who advised people on ICOs, among others. Everyone was chatty and excited.

Waiting for the elevator on the way out an ethical hacker stopped to congratulate two guys in their early 20s standing next to me.
“My staff love you guys, they’ve got your stickers,” the hacker said.
Down at ground level, I asked what the pair were working on. They were the cofounders of Aragon, a crypto-based platform to build decentralized organisations on top of. They couldn’t stay to chat — one had to find his Uber nearby, while the other left on a skateboard.
The conference began the next day. Consensus in New York is the biggest and best-known crypto conference and this year’s event generated headlines of fake banker protests, rented Lamborghinis, and raucous after parties.
The Crypto Valley Conference was held at Zug’s Theatre and Casino and I was hoping there would be similar stories — the crypto casino! — but the conference was a sober and serious affair by comparison.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) certified the event and, as such, it was much more academic than other crypto conferences. Attendees were genuinely passionate about the technology and its potential, rather than simply seeing it as a money-making opportunity.

The Mayor of Zug, a representative of the government’s economy department, and a Swiss federal councillor all spoke on the first day, underlining the level of political support for the industry.
“The city of Zug, they see this as fantastic brand building,” Bussmann said. “Now we have regular strategic meetings with the canton of Zug. It’s a new business.”
Luis Cuende, one of the cofounders of Aragon I had seen the night before, appeared on a panel alongside a representative from the Swiss central bank. The moderator joked that it was the first event he had done where one person was in shorts and another in a tie. You can probably guess who was wearing what.
The two-day conference covered everything from more energy efficient methods of certifying cryptocurrency transactions to how the technology could apply to the internet of things, how the legal world is dealing with the new sector, and how high-frequency trading could impact crypto.
Aragon, Bitcoin Suisse, and Shapeshift all had booths at the conference, as did Melonport, another notable crypto company based in Zug. Melonport was founded by a former Goldman Sachs banker and is building a blockchain-based asset management system.

The first day of the conference ended with a boat trip on Lake Zug for all the attendees. If there was going to be any crypto raucousness, surely this is where it would happen. But the crowd were as well behaved after hours as they were at the main event. Groups talked about the beauty of bitcoin as an idea, its business applications, and continued to crunch through thorny development problems.

Zug had been in the headlines that week after a long Wired article about issues at troubled crypto startup Tezos, which was based in Zug. Most people just dismissed it as a freakish and unusual tragedy in the space rather than anything that should reflect on Zug.
“I think that has much more to do with the specific people involved than it does the space or even Zug itself,” Shapeshift’s Jon told me. “I think that’s just kind of coincidental.”

Shapeshift’s Jon was full of praise for the regulators and governments in Switzerland for helping to foster the sector.
“I would love to see the Swiss model replicated elsewhere,” he said.
Bitcoin Suisse’s Vayloyan said: “Zug is definitely a great place to do business because you have this network, you have the government who supports it. You sense it, you sense that there is support in the crypto sphere. They are playing it very well.”

“There is really a feeling that there is a lot of innovation happening right here in Zug and with companies in Zug,” Shapeshift’s Jon had told me. “Ever since we set up here, more and more companies are coming here because they see it as a friendly place to do business.”
Heinrich Zetlmayer, a general partner at Zurich-based Blockchain Valley Ventures, told me: “I am just very impressed by the quality of some of the startups here and the dynamic here. There are so many what I would call industrial blockchain startups here — it keeps us very busy.”
“It is in reality not just about legislation and taxes,” Zetlmayer said. “It’s a good place to be that makes your startup faster. What was Silicon Valley before you know? That had all the ingredients and ‘voom’ things were running faster.
“Here in Zug, we are all very quick talking to each other. And it is big enough that there is a critical mass. We somehow have a lot of things going for us. It makes it a unique place.”
Bussmann is so pleased with the success of Crypto Valley in Zug that he is now talking about marketing Switzerland as a “crypto nation.” The association already has some members even beyond the countries borders in Milan.
“We have about 15 requests per day for startup coaching, investor tours, government ambassadors want to talk to us, regulators are calling because we have these frameworks,” he said.

Disney is developing humanoid robots capable of being catapulted into the air to perform stunts, according to TechCrunch.
The project is called “Stuntronics,” and it sprang out of a research experiment called “Stickman.”
The robots can be used as stunt doubles for more delicate animatronics during Disneyland shows.

Disneyland parks have incorporated animatronics into their displays for decades, but with its new project, “Stuntronics,” Disney hopes to take performing robotics to the next level.
The project was born of a research experiment named “Stickman.” Stickman was a robot who was able to perform acrobatic flips, and was essentially just an articulated pole.
With Stuntronics the aim was to create a humanoid robot which could act as a stunt double for other “hero” animatronic figures in the park.
The robot can be flung through the air, controlling its pose, rotation, and center of mass. It can even strike a superhero pose mid-flight. You can watch it in action below:
According to TechCrunch, the robots could be used in attractions and shows at Disneyland parks, standing in for more delicate animatronics, which could not withstand being flung through the sky.
LeBron James’ first NBA free agency decision, back in 2010, was met with contempt. James went on national television to dump northeast Ohio, his home, for Miami; Cleveland fans burned his jersey in the streets. The public turned on him. His second move, four years ago, was feted. After winning two titles in South Beach, James returned to Cleveland for a second chance to end the city’s major pro championship drought — which stretched back to 1954 — and become beloved again. The Cavs won the 2016 title. Mission accomplished.
Now comes LeBron James’ third decision, handed down Sunday night. The world’s best basketball player announced, via a release from his agent’s firm, that he has signed a four-year, $154 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
This move lands somewhere in the middle. Call the Decision, Part 3 very acceptable, if not borderline exciting. Sure, that doesn’t exactly sound like a ringing endorsement of LeBron’s move. But it’s stealthy terrific for the NBA.
James has made a practical choice. He has homes in Los Angeles, and his sons are approaching high school age. They’re both talented basketball players, and Southern California’s a hoops hotbed. He has a Hollywood production company. No one in northeast Ohio can begrudge him for leaving this time around. He delivered his Cleveland championship, which wins you immunity from jersey-burning.
LeBron to L.A. doesn’t come with the redemption narrative that accompanied his move from Miami to Cleveland. But for basketball fans, the deal is filled with potential upsides. The world’s best player is joining a legendary franchise, located in the entertainment capital of the globe. Sure, even with the LeBron, L.A. can’t match the Golden State Warriors superstar-for-superstar, especially with L.A.-native Paul George deciding to re-up with the Oklahoma City Thunder rather than sign with the Lakers. But Los Angeles can still trade for Kawhi Leonard, the former all-NBA first-teamer who’s coming off an injury plagued season with the San Antonio Spurs. Young players like Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Lonzo Ball can offer James help.
And while the Lakers may challenge the Warriors and Houston Rockets for Western Conference supremacy, LeBron’s move to California opens the door for the Boston Celtics, who are loaded with talents like Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward and budding star Jason Tatum, and the Philadelphia 76ers, with young game-changers Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, to reach the NBA Finals. By relocating to Los Angeles, LeBron’s sharing the NBA spotlight, which can only help the league long-term.
This move’s the mark of a player who’s terribly secure with his impact on the game. LeBron might be the best basketball player ever. But only joining the Golden State Warriors, or shoehorning his way onto the Houston Rockets roster, would have ensured he wins the 2019 championship. In fact, with the Warriors still in tact for the foreseeable future, LeBron may fall short during his L.A. stay, giving grist to the pundits who knock him for only winning three titles, as opposed to Michael Jordan’s six.
But he seems very much OK with that. He’s moving to L.A. because SoCal suits his interests, and his family. He didn’t announce the decision in a cheesy TV special, or in an essay to the world. Even through a bland press release, James can shake up the NBA. And he knows it.
The NBA’s already the hottest sport in the country. Baseball’s approaching its All-Star break, and we’re in the middle of a World Cup. NFL training camps start in a few weeks. Yet here we are, entering the July 4th holiday obsessing about NBA players switching uniforms. And with LeBron James now wearing the purple and gold of the L.A. Lakers, things can only get better for basketball.

Tributes, humor, and music honor Harvard’s 28th president, with dancing as dessertDrew Faust said goodbye as Harvard’s president Thursday as members of the University community celebrated her 11 years as leader with humorous and heartfelt tributes and moving musical performances in Sanders Theatre, and dancing that stretched into the evening at Annenberg Hall.
Faust became the University’s 28th president in 2007, the first woman to hold that job. Yet the Virginia native, historian, professor, and founding dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study was quick to tell those gathered at her opening press conference that she was “not the woman president of Harvard; I’m the president of Harvard.”
Thursday’s party bookended the celebration of her inauguration on Oct. 11, 2007, which also was in Sanders Theatre, and which included musical tributes from students, alumni, and professors, as well as a humorous video introduced by actor John Lithgow ’67 titled “A Primer for a President.” On Thursday, several guests looked back to rate Faust on her years in Massachusetts Hall, offering grades in a number of “presidential” lessons. Unsurprisingly, she aced them all.
Lithgow, the afternoon’s master of ceremonies, kicked off the tribute with archival photos of Faust, and asked the faculty present to stand as he called for a voice vote to “celebrate and commend Drew Faust for a job well done.” The faculty gave a resounding “aye.”
“Achieving faculty consensus is an art,” quipped Lithgow, who gave Faust an A for “Lesson One: Take control of faculty meetings.”

Actor Courtney B. Vance ’82 and his two children awarded Faust an A-plus for her ability to honor traditions while being unafraid to question and challenge ones “that may have outlived their usefulness,” including the term “House master,” which Faust worked to replace with “faculty dean.”
Harvard’s 31st treasurer, Paul Finnegan ’75, praised Faust, who took office on the eve of the 2008 financial crisis, for staying strong during adversity. “When the going got tough, you got tougher. You acted swiftly but with care,” Finnegan said, offering her an AAA credit rating in lieu of a grade.
Faust also got high marks for taking chances during her presidency from someone who knows about taking public risks for a living. “You just have to be willing to screw up and not freak out when you do screw up, because you will screw up. I mean, you are really going to screw up,” joked comedian Conan O’Brien ’85 in a video clip.
Faust was also praised for using her position to fight for what she thought was right, for her devotion to athletics, and for her commitment to the sciences, which earned for her from Lithgow a new element on the periodic table: Drewdium.
When it came to picking advisers, Jack Reardon ’60, a former admissions officer, athletic director, and head of the Harvard Alumni Association, said Faust deserved high marks for having the most important expert always in her corner, Charles Rosenberg, Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus — her husband.
Top marks for “Don’t Forget the Arts” were never in doubt. Faust made incorporating the arts into campus life a hallmark of her presidency. She helped introduce the Theater, Dance & Media concentration and added art to Harvard Yard. Diane Paulus ’87, artistic director of the American Repertory Theater, said she was “continually inspired by President Faust’s profound understanding that the arts have the unique ability to engage our hearts as well as our minds.” She then introduced a segment by jazz great Wynton Marsalis, who helmed a two-year performance and lectures series at Harvard, ushered in through Faust.

“The project that is higher education, that is opening minds and changing lives and discovering truths, it’s just an exhilarating privilege to be part of it and to have been in this institution and to have watched so many talented people — and you saw a lot of them onstage tonight — commit themselves to this project,” said Faust, offering her thanks to the crowd.
“You have done the work that I was being praised for tonight,” Faust said. “This has been a collective enterprise, and it’s a collective enterprise that I know is going to continue in support of my successor, Larry Bacow.”

Mandolinist Forrest O’Connor ’10 and guitarist Jim Shirey ’11, members of the Grammy-winning bluegrass ensemble the Mark O’Connor Band, took the stage as part of a group called the Drew Crew. Aditya Raguram ’18, pianist and research fellow in genetics at Harvard Medical School, also performed, as did singer Joshuah Campbell ’16, who concluded the ceremony with a lively rendition of The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” That got Faust up on her feet to bust a move center stage with Lithgow.

Attendees were then treated to a dance party in Annenberg Hall, which was transformed into a disco with neon lights, a D.J., a black-and-white checked dance floor, and some of Faust’s favorite foods, including shrimp dumplings, beef sliders, falafel wraps, bacon, and chocolate.
Jeffrey Douyon, a staff assistant at the Harvard Alumni Association, said that while he had never met Faust he felt as if he knew her after attending the celebration. Hearing “so many kind and beautiful words about her work over the last 11 years and to just be a part of the spirit of this room tonight was beautiful,” said Douyon.
“It’s bittersweet,” he added. “It’s sad to see her go. On the other hand, I am excited to see how her legacy lasts here at Harvard.”
Study explores how brain processes temperature information, influences behavior
Do you pause what you’re doing to put on a sweater because you feel chilly? Do you click the thermostat up a few degrees on a winter day? What about keeping a fan on your desk, or ducking into an air-conditioned room to beat the heat?
If so (and, let’s face it, everyone has), then you’ve used sensory information about your environment — the temperature — to alter your behavior.
But exactly how the brain processes that information has largely remained a mystery. To shed light on that, a team of researchers led by Martin Haesemeyer, a research associate in the labs of Florian Engert, professor of molecular and cellular biology, and Alexander Schier, the Leo Erikson Life Sciences Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, turned to an unlikely subject: zebrafish.
Using whole-brain imaging techniques, Haesemeyer was able to show how sensory neurons innervating the face detect environmental temperature, and how this information is passed on to the hindbrain of the fish, where it is processed to produce behavior. The study is described in a paper published earlier this year in Neuron.
“Unlike us, zebrafish can’t regulate their body temperature,” Haesemeyer said. “They live in fairly shallow pools like rice paddies and small ponds [where] the temperature can fluctuate quite a lot, so being able to navigate those temperature gradients is important.”
The temperature-sensing process in zebrafish, Haesemeyer said, begins in much the same way as it does for humans, with somatosensory neurons in the face. The neurons that detect temperature changes are cells in a structure called the trigeminal ganglion.

“In humans — and zebrafish — this structure is located somewhere between the eyes and the ears,” Haesemeyer said. “We can then look at how the trigeminal ganglion encodes the temperature and what those cells do when the temperature changes. What we find is there are cells which are excited when temperatures increase, while others fire more when temperatures are low. What happens from there is these cells project to an area in the hindbrain of the fish.”
While that temperature information is encoded in the firing rates of the neurons, on its own that’s not enough to alter the behavior of the fish, Haesemeyer said.
“There’s a computation that happens to extract more information,” he said. “In the hindbrain we also find cells that use this signal to not only process how warm it is, but to calculate the direction of change, so the fish can tell if it’s getting warmer or cooler.”
While more work is needed to understand fully how the neurons make that calculation, Haesemeyer said researchers have a strong hypothesis.
“The way we think this works is to rely on the adaptation of neurons,” he said. “What that means is if you give neurons the same strength of input for a long time, what you see is they initially fire a lot, but the activity eventually falls off. We think that’s what is happening here. We think there are cells in the hindbrain that are connected to the trigeminal ganglion cells, and these hindbrain cells will be almost silent if the temperature is constant. But as soon as you get a change in temperature, those cells will start to fire.”
This research was supported with funding from an EMBO Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Biomedical Research, and the National Institutes of Health.

Haesemeyer said he plans to work on getting a more detailed picture of the neural circuit in the hind brain that translates heat information into behavior.
“What we have from this study is a model that is pretty good at taking stimuli and predicting activity in the brain and behavior,” he said. “But it’s not a full-circuit implementation, so one place I want to go is to better understand how connectivity and cellular properties shape this computation, because calculating the direction of change allows the fish, or any other animal, to do a simple form of prediction.
“I imagine this is a fairly widespread motif, so I think it will be interesting to study exactly how it is implemented in the hind brain, because I think it’s probably consistent across many animals,” he added.

Nearly three-and-a-half years after they created Forward Food plant-based culinary training at Harvard, Chef Wanda White and Ken Botts of the Humane Society of the United States returned to campus on June 4 and 5 to lead Harvard University Dining Services’ (HUDS) chefs and managers through a two-day intensive training and tasting on plant-based cuisine.
In the intervening time, plants have moved to the center of many diners’ plates, as individuals recognize the health and environmental benefits of making fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and seeds the greatest focus of their daily meals.
At Harvard, while the number of students who identify as vegan or vegetarian hasn’t changed much, more forgo meat as a core component of every meal. In a recent satisfaction survey, 57 percent of student respondents noted it was very important to them to eat healthy, with another 38 percent saying it was somewhat important. At the center of their definition are lean proteins, whole grains and vegetables.
“This training gives our chefs a chance to reframe their thinking,” says David Davidson, managing director of HUDS. “Many of them were classically trained in a style where meat was the center of the plate and the core, defining flavor. Forward Food gives them an opportunity to explore new recipes, techniques and ingredients.”
“In January of 2015, HUDS asked us if we did kitchen-based training programs,” said Ken Botts, director of Food and nutrition for the Humane Society of the United States. “I said yes, but the truth was we hadn’t ever done a formal program. We created it here, and since that first program we’ve done more than 160 culinary workshops, training more than 2,400 professionals, across the United States, and just recently extending to Canada, Europe, and South America.”
“We’ve been doing a great deal of work making plants a more prominent feature on our menu,” notes Martin Breslin, HUDS’ director for Culinary Operations. “This past year, we added a dedicated plant protein dish at every lunch and dinner. By the end of the school year, we’d served almost 47,000 pounds more plant proteins than the year before. We’ve altered the ratio of meat to vegetables in countless dishes, and created stations where students can really tailor a dish’s contents to make meat a condiment, rather than a feature.”
Botts notes, “It’s invaluable to us to work with food service teams like Harvard’s. They are on the front line, responding to student tastes, but also shaping the way they’ll view and consume food moving forward. What happens in a campus dining hall can alter an individual’s approach to food for the rest of their lives, and we’re thrilled to contribute to the knowledge base that will help guide that toward a more sustainable future.”
“It’s awesome to watch our team embrace new ways of thinking,” says Davidson. “They’re tasting these new recipes and they’re excited by the possibilities. They’re energized by the work.”
